(RE)Defining Equality 2021 and COVID-19

Dear everyone,

Due to the ongoing pandemic of COVID-19, together with the board of UWC Austria, we have made the decision to postpone (RE)Defining Equality 2021 to July 2022. This decision was made in accordance with the current political regulations in Austria, the projected state of the pandemic in July as well as our responsibility for the health of everyone involved in our Short Course.

While some Short Courses have taken place online or have opted for a regional option in 2020 and will continue to do so in 2021, we have chosen not to pursue either of the two options.
We have decided not to go with an Online Short Course as we believe that (RE)Defining Equality is currently unable to deliver the desired learning outcomes for its participants when taking place online. With our current knowledge and skills we do not think we can provide the much needed environment and safe space for everyone in order for such discussions to take place when organizing the Short Course online.
Furthermore, we decided against a regional Short Course, as this would first and foremost still not mitigate the chances of somebody falling ill due to COVID-19; secondly, to cater to this regional participant pool even greater changes to the curriculum would need to be made which we do not see ourselves being able to deliver with the few months left for planning as the coordination team is comprised of two full-time university students.

We are very sad having to take this course of action but believe it to be the best solution for (RE)Defining Equality, its participants & facilitators as well for all other people involved in the programme.

What does that mean for you as applicants?

Participant applicants:

We are aware that many of you have already been very excited about applying and about the prospect of spending two weeks in Austria along with 40 other young, driven and idealistic students from all around the world discussing equality. We are looking forward to reading your applications next year!

To those of you who will not be eligible to apply to (RE)Defining Equality in 2022 due to being 18 years or older, please feel free to contact us. We will gladly do our best to try to refer you to another Short Course taking place in 2021 or 2022!

Facilitator applicants:

We have already received a number of passionate emails about potentially facilitating the 2021 Short Course. We were very happy to read them! We hope many of you will apply to our Short Course next year!

Facilitator applicants that have already applied in 2020: We are sorry that you all have already completed your application form. Over the course of the next year we might make adjustments to the application form. If you are interested in applying for a facilitator position for the 2022 Austrian Short Course, you will be allowed to use your 2020 application as a template to fill in your 2021 application. Further details will follow once the application window opens for (RE)Defining Equality 2022.

Thank your all for your understanding!

If you have any questions please feel free to contact us.

All the best to you and your families & stay safe,
